From Monday 6th May The Old School Muker is proud to be showcasing the work of master print maker Laura Boswell.
Laura’s work, with its Japanese aesthetic, will be in the gallery during May, and is not to be missed.
Laura works exclusively in linocut and authentic Japanese water-based woodblock. She was elected to the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers in 2018. Laura has a joint degree in art history and visual art and trained in Japan with traditional carving and print artisans. Her prints can be found in collections in the UK and Japan, including the House of Lords, The Library of Wales, the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and the Bucks County Museum. Laura’s book, Making Japanese Woodblock Prints, will be published in 2019.
Artist Statement
My work focuses on landscape in the UK and in Japan where I studied traditional Japanese watercolour woodblock printing. My interest lies in pattern and form within landscape and its light, weather and seasonality. I hope to leave the viewer with a feeling of the familiar or remembered rather than a specific geography. My approach is to begin with observational drawings and then adapt their various elements to fit my own construct. My current work exploits meticulous cutting of the block to create a feel of fluid and spontaneous line, white space and a painterly approach to inking the block. This often results in editions where cut marks are identical, yet every print is subtly unique.
